Jason McKechnie
Jason McKechnie started playing for Nijmegen during the 1995-96 season as a forward. He came Jason McKechnie in his final season for Nijmegenthat season from Tilburg where he was cut during the christmas break. He ended up in Tilburg in the slipstream of his friends Steve Kruize and Brad Shaver. When McKechnie (nicknamed “Wild Thing”) went to Nijmegen he ended up with 8 years of loyal service.
During his stay he transformed from a feisty forward into a stable defenceman with a devastating slap shot from the blue line. In a short period he managed to turn into a fan-favorite by his passionate style of playing and his hot temperateness. As a player he embodied the Nijmegen blue-collar style of play and that is to play with your heart. Furthermore he will be remembered as one of the few foreign players that would dive before a shot in order to prevent a goal.
During his stay in Nijmegen he managed to appear in 319 games scoring 320 points and racking up 1005 minutes in penalties making him the most scoring import from Nijmegen ever. More importantly: during his stay he helped Nijmegen win the championship four times and the Dutch cup two times.
